Our great thanks to you all - we are very proud! **** this gem of a thatched cottage is over 250 yrs old and is situated at the start of the causeway coast & glens route, opposite the andrew jackson cottage and us rangers centre on the shores of belfast lough. This quaint irish cottage has been sympathetically restored without loosing any of its old world charm. Fools haven thatched cottage is self catering approved by northern ireland tourist board and has been awarded four stars. Fools haven is where 2 local children, orphaned by the titanic tragedy, were brought up. They had been sent to live with their aunt while their father sailed onboard the titanic as an engineer on that fateful maiden voyage to new york in april 1912. One of the children, ruddick millar, has been honoured with the unveiling of a historic blue plaque at fools haven thatched cottage on eighth february 2012. He was a titanic orphan, journalist, author and playwright 1907-1952. The author of stirabout, when johnny comes marching home and the land girl was raised in fool’s haven cottage in the co antrim village of boneybefore following his father’s death. By the age of 18, one of ruddick millar’s plays was being performed at the grand opera house in belfast. He continued to write plays for stage and radio, newspaper articles and books until his death aged 46 in 1952. New for 2012 is a bbq hut for guests to use and a playhouse for children - see images. We are approximately 1 and half miles from historic carrickfergus castle, town, restaurants and leisure facilities. 5 minutes walk (or less) to train, bus, post office and local shops. Arrival by either air or sea, to 1 of the main airports or ferry-ports in northern ireland, brings you within 30 minutes short drive to carrickfergus. Fools haven sleeps 5: one double and 1 twin room. Main bathroom with bath downstairs and another with electric shower upstairs. Completely equipped kitchen with electric hob and oven, cloths washer/dryer, fridge/freezer and micro-wave. Linen, towels, oil heating and electric are included in price. A complimentary welcome tray awaits your arrival and includes a selection of home prepared produce. Private patio & picnic area for use by guests. Off road parking for 1 car. Bicycles available at the cottage for guests to use. Board games and books for you to enjoy. Mp3 / ipod docking station for your use. Travel cot, high chair, stair gate for children.
