The vicinity is a designated nature protection area and as such is also a site of special scientific interest (sssi) the captivating views across the fields stretch as far as the eye can see. We are also proud of the reputation and strategic importance the location afforded us during ww2 as we are on the doorstep of the old site of metfield air base, home to the 353rd fighter group and 491st bomb group(station 366). Complimented by the distant sounds of cockrels, geese, cows and farm activity, this is 1 of england's rarest unspolit locations. Warm and bright, gates lodge is equipped with all state of the art living conveniences, including dishwasher, cloths washer, cooker/hob, fridge, microwave. No expense has been spared in this thoughtfully converted lodge, with solid oak flooring, 5in insulation throughout, wood-burner and economy seven heating whilst retaining its original character with original exposed oak beams. The lodge is an ideal touring base, being close to many local places of interest including the renowned heritage coast, with its endless sandy beaches. Guests are spoilt for choice with the many country pubs and restaurants in the immediate area, some of which are famous for their medieval character and have won contless awards. the views around gates lodge are just about as "away-from-it-all" as you are going to get anywhere in the uk, with endless farmland views, which are a delight in the summer months particularly at harvest time...you may occasionally be disturbed by the odd passing tractor, and the distant sounds of cockrels, peacocks and cows are a distinct contrast to those of city or town life and certainly make your holiday a pleasant alternative to those endless airport queues and frustrations! . The local village of fressingfield is a five minute drive away, ten minute cycle or 45mins walk past farms and fields. The village has a local shop which is useful for those essental day to day items and shopping. Fressingfield church and the adjacent michelin-starred famous fox and goose inn are a delightful setting to amble around and stop off and have lunch or dinner either inside its oak-beamed restaurant areas or outside in warmer months overlooking the pond. Many guests travel far and wide to stay with us for dinner evenings there so booking is advisable - please let us know and we would be pleased to arrange this for you. There are usually many local fetes and events on in the summer months, which include the royal british legion summer fete at whittington hall, the fressingfield fete, fressingfield music festival, open gardens, wingfield barns music and comedy, and local classic car events, to name but a few. Just simply to walk around the site is a therapeutic experience in itself, but as well as the endless country lanes and field walks around us, close by is the renowned heritage coast, endless sandy beaches and unspoilt picturesque seaside towns such as aldeburgh and southwold with its pier. Fantastic views and natural surroundings such as minsmere, dunwich and walberswick, and of course the renowned norfolk broads. The region is full of educational as well as fun historical attractions including sutton hoo, orford and framlingham castles, and the gressenhall museum of norfolk country life. Other family activities include the nearby oasis camel centre, africa alive, and bressingham zoo and steam museum. The region is famous for supporting the war effort and is dotted with many former airfields and transport museums close by, such as flixton. There are also various outlets for horse riding lessons, golf and fishing. Or simply just take it easy and go for a quick walk or drive and stop off at many of the fabulous local pubs on the way !
