Built in 1770 for joseph oldham, proprietor of the local paper mill, it was transformed in 1811 for thomas botfield who employed john nash to enhance the character of the house as a classical villa. Nash made a number of changes to the house, not least adding a 3rd storey which is now the apartment. This self-contained apartment has fabulous views reaching over elegant parkland, pretty fields, an outstanding picturesque landscaped garden by humphry repton, with the clee hill in the distance. The pretty village of hopton wafers with the charming church of st michael and all angels and the crown inn is in the valley below. This exceptional, comfortable, well appointed, self-contained and spacious accommodation was fully refurbished in july 2010. Situated on the 2nd floor of the house, the entrance lobby has both stairs and a lift. Two beds, one double and 1 twin, each have ensuite bathrooms. The study/library has a sofabed. The utility room contains a cloths washer, drying rack, iron and ironing board. The large dedicated dining area area comfortably seats ten around an elegant georgian mahogany table. The elegant drawing room has satellite tv, video disc player and ipod dock. The study/library contains a wide selection of books and games the grounds the apartment has a separate entrance and private garden area with gas barbecue and garden furniture. Across the lawn of the main house you might like to visit the grade ii* listed victorian conservatory or take a walk around the lake or along the azalea bed (flowering late may early june) down to the brook in the ancient woodland belt of trees.
